Biodiesel
is cleaner burning fuel for use in diesel vehicles
and is made from newly refined vegetable oil, such
as soybean oil, or recycled restaurant-cooking
oil. Although it can be 100 % vegetable oil, biodeisel
generally refers to a blend of soybean oil or recycled
restaurant oils and standard diesel fuel.
Biodiesel is not used in the generation
of electricity, but it is another renewable energy
source utilized as part of the East Kentucky Power
Cooperatives “green” effort.
The fleet of diesel trucks and heavy equipment operating out of East Kentucky's
Winchester, KY headquarters is powered by biodeisel. The Biodiesel purchased
by EKPC is not only environmentally beneficial, but it supports Kentucky
agriculture and industry. The soybean oil is from soybeans grown by America's
farmers and the Biodeisel is produced by Griffin Industries, Inc. in Butler,
Kentucky.
By switching to Biodiesel, EKPC's fleet is producing significantly less air
pollution. Added bonuses include longer engine life since Biodiesel
is cleaner running, and with each gallon of Biodiesel used our dependence
of foreign oil imports lessens. Biodiesel, just another cooperative effort. |
